What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session
Taking the step to start therapy takes courage — and it's completely normal to feel nervous, unsure, or even a little skeptical. One of the biggest barriers people face is simply not knowing what to expect. So let me walk you through it.
Before the Session
If we haven't spoken yet, we'll start with a free 15-minute phone consultation. This is a chance for you to share a little about what's bringing you to therapy, ask any questions you have, and get a feel for whether we might be a good fit. There's no pressure or commitment involved.
Once you schedule your first full session, I'll send you a brief intake form to complete in advance. This gives me some background so we can use our time together well.
What Happens in the First Session
The first session is primarily about getting to know each other. I'll ask you some open-ended questions — about what's been difficult lately, a bit about your history, and what you're hoping to get from therapy.
You don't need to have everything figured out or know exactly what to say. There's no "right" way to start. Many people simply begin by talking about what's been on their mind.
I won't push you to share anything you're not ready for. We go at your pace, always.
Common Worries (and the Reality)
- "I don't even know where to start." That's okay — we figure it out together.
- "What if I cry?" Crying is welcome. This is exactly the kind of space where that's allowed.
- "What if I'm not 'bad enough' for therapy?" There's no threshold of suffering required. If something is affecting your quality of life, that's enough.
- "What if we're not a good fit?" The therapeutic relationship matters enormously. It's completely okay to see if it feels right after a few sessions.
After the First Session
It's normal to feel a mix of things after — relief, tiredness, or even uncertainty. Starting therapy stirs things up. Give yourself some grace and time before evaluating whether it's the right fit.
