How Trauma Lives in the Body

When most people think about trauma, they think about memories — the story of what happened. But trauma isn't stored only in the mind. It lives in the body too: in chronic tension, a racing heart, an inability to breathe deeply, or a nervous system that never quite calms down.

Understanding this mind-body connection is one of the most important insights in modern trauma treatment — and it helps explain why some people can "know" they are safe but still not feel safe.

The Nervous System and Trauma

When we experience a threat, our nervous system activates a survival response — fight, flight, or freeze. Normally, once the danger passes, the body returns to a calm baseline.

After trauma, this reset doesn't always happen fully. The nervous system can get stuck in a state of high alert, treating ordinary situations as dangerous. This shows up as:

  • Chronic muscle tension, especially in the shoulders, jaw, or gut
  • A startle response that seems out of proportion
  • Difficulty breathing deeply or relaxing
  • Feeling perpetually on guard, even in safe environments
  • Physical symptoms with no clear medical cause — headaches, digestive issues, fatigue
  • Feeling numb or disconnected from your body (dissociation)

Why Talking Alone Isn't Always Enough

Traditional talk therapy is invaluable for building insight and processing meaning — but trauma also needs to be addressed at the level of the body and nervous system. This is why, in our work together, I pay attention to what's happening beneath the words: to breathing, to physical sensations, to the unspoken.

We work to help your nervous system learn — through repeated experience of safety in our sessions — that it is okay to settle. Over time, the body begins to believe what the mind already knows.

Signs Your Body May Be Holding Trauma

  • You can't remember feeling truly relaxed in your body
  • Certain sounds, smells, or situations trigger a physical reaction
  • You hold your breath without realizing it
  • Physical intimacy feels difficult or unsafe
  • You feel disconnected from physical sensations

Healing Includes Your Body

If any of this resonates, trauma therapy can help you reconnect — with yourself, with safety, and with the present moment. I work with adults throughout Los Altos, Mountain View, and the greater South Bay. Reach out for a free consultation.
