Low Self-Esteem and Therapy: Learning to Value Yourself

Many people live with a quiet but constant inner voice that tells them they're not good enough, not smart enough, not lovable enough. This voice can feel so familiar that it's hard to imagine life without it — or to recognize it as something that can actually change.

Low self-esteem isn't a character flaw. It's almost always the result of what we absorbed early in life about our worth and place in the world — and it can be worked with in therapy.

Where Does Low Self-Esteem Come From?

  • Growing up with critical, dismissive, or emotionally unavailable parents
  • Childhood experiences of bullying, rejection, or being made to feel "too much" or "not enough"
  • Trauma or abuse that left messages of shame
  • Cultural or family messages about your worth being conditional on achievement, appearance, or behavior
  • Chronic comparison to others that became internalized

How Low Self-Esteem Shows Up in Daily Life

  • Difficulty accepting compliments or recognizing your own achievements
  • A persistent sense that you're "faking it" and will be found out (impostor syndrome)
  • Putting others' needs first, always
  • Staying in situations — jobs, relationships — that don't honor you, because you don't believe you deserve better
  • An inner critic that is far harsher than anything you'd say to a friend

How Therapy Helps

In psychodynamic therapy, we trace the roots of these beliefs and begin to examine them — not by simply replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, but by understanding where they came from and why they made sense at the time.

When you understand that your self-criticism was originally an adaptation to your environment, it starts to lose some of its power. Slowly, with a consistent experience of being seen and valued in the therapy relationship, a more compassionate inner voice begins to develop.

You Are Worth This Work

If you've spent years believing you're not enough, therapy can be a place to begin questioning that story. I work with adults across Los Altos and the South Bay. Reach out for a free phone consultation.
